Description

Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Bloomington, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Medical Surgical, adjacent to Emergency Department
  • Patient Types: Medical Surgical only (e.g., COVID, abdominal pain, respiratory distress, symptom-based observation)
  • Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: Required
  • Charge Nurse: May be required to cover charge nurse duties with training and resources

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification
  • Education: Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Cerner Electronic Medical Record system

Scheduling & Time Off Restrictions

  • Shift pattern: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts available
  • Unit cannot accommodate time off on the following holidays/weekends:
    • Memorial Day and weekend
    • Father’s Day weekend
    • 4th of July weekend
    • Labor Day weekend
    • Thanksgiving
    • Christmas

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background Checks (within 90 days):
    • 7-year address history verification including SSN trace, county/state/national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III
    • Education verification (may be pending at start if needed)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (within 30 days)
  • License Verification: Online primary source verification within 30 days before start
  • Physical Exam: Completed within 12 months of start date
  • Fit Mask Test: Within 12 months, using approved respirators (N95 or PAPR with facility approval)
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tuberculosis test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 documented vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Strongly recommended (preferred)
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccination: Required during flu season (9/30–3/31) with no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval
  • Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (no instant tests)
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology test and unit competency exam required
  • Color Blind Testing: Ishihara exam or equivalent with 100% minimum score
  • References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment verified within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above

Additional Notes

  • IU Health policy effective 11/30/24 restricts Indiana RN licenses from working at their facilities except for Perioperative/OR and certain allied specialties (e.g., ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be assigned based on operational needs with provided training
  • Facility-specific orientation and compliance forms must be completed as a priority prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs with prior travel experience who are comfortable working night shifts and meeting strict holiday availability requirements.
