Description

Registered Nurse - MedSurg/Telemetry (Travel/Contract)

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 7:15), 4 shifts per week (48 hours/week)
Patient Ratio: 1:6


Job Description

  • Care primarily for stroke patients and various neurological diagnoses including neurosurgery, epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas.
  • Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU); training provided but typically does not affect travelers unless trained.
  • Daily census approximately 42 patients in 43 rooms/beds.
  • Frequent floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units.
  • Travelers must work every other weekend; if weekend call-offs occur, shifts must be made up either the same week or at contract end.
  • Preferred scheduling but block scheduling is not guaranteed.
  • Navy scrubs required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 1 year of MedSurg/Telemetry experience within the last year.
  • Completion of at least 2 travel nursing assignments.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Experience in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 36 hours.
  • Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
  • Required to complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and annual compliance training.
  • Must complete physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, additional testing and documentation required.
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or PAPR training required.
  • Required immunizations and titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable), seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption.
  • Negative drug screen within 30 days of start required.

Background & Compliance

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local, federal, sex offender, and education verification.
  • North Carolina Division of Medical Assistance and Healthcare Personnel Registry searches required within 90 days prior to start.
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment.
  • Must complete facility-specific orientation checklists and education modules, including non-Novant health worker orientation if applicable.

Additional Information

  • Floating to other units and weekend work are mandatory.
  • No return to office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in contract cancellation.
  • Must submit a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation prior to start.
  • Must complete password setup and login to facility’s learning management system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel acute care nurses.
  • Performance evaluations required if previously worked with the agency over one year.

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg/Telemetry RNs with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable with neurological patient care, telemetry monitoring, and flexible scheduling including floating and weekend shifts.
