Description

Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work primarily with medical-surgical patients with oncology history on a Med/Surg/Oncology unit.
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15).
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio target: 1:6 (may increase with census).
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including inpatient holding in the Emergency Department.
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Must participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings expected.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum 2 years of oncology nursing experience, with oncology experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience in an inpatient setting, specifically medical-surgical (Med/Surg).
  • Chemotherapy certification and ability to administer chemotherapy.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification.
  • Charge nurse experience.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification.

Orientation & Uniform

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white.

Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details

  • Patient diagnoses include: AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, acute renal failure, encephalopathy, failure to thrive, diabetic foot ulcers, heparin drips.
  • Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection.
  • Daily census approximately 42 patients.

Systems Used

  • Medication and documentation systems: PYXIS, EPIC.
  • Communication: SBAR.

Compliance & Testing Requirements

  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start (1st attempt within 72 hours, minimum 82% score required).
  • Color blindness testing required within 1 year prior to start.
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exams required for new contracts.
  • Background check required within 6 months prior to start.
  • Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months prior to start.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive.
  • Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
  • Physical exam documentation required per travel agency standards.

Documentation & Onboarding Requirements

  • Photo ID (passport or driver’s license) required.
  • Passport-style photo for badge creation required immediately after signing contract.
  • Completion of facility-specific education modules and compliance training prior to start.
  • Signed confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment required.
  • Proof of logging into facility’s learning management system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of account setup.
  • Various accounting and tax documents required prior to start.

Additional Notes

  • Shifts called out must be made up.
  • Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed.
  • Contract staff expected to work during mass casualty or disaster events.
  • Candidate must be able to float to alternate inpatient care locations.
