Description

Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Beaufort, South Carolina
Shift: Day (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must have ICU experience; traveler will float to ICU, Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical units.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:4-5.
  • Unit has 21 beds.
  • Care includes non-titrating drips such as Amiodarone, NTG, Cardizem, Lopressor, Cardene.
  • Patient conditions include vascular cases (fem-pop, CEA), NSTEMI, post cardiac catheterization with intervention, CIWA protocol with IVP Ativan (no Presidex).
  • Other care responsibilities: peritoneal dialysis, stable BiPAP, heated high flow oxygen (<80%), home ventilators (Trilogy), wound care, nebulizers, and hemodialysis in the dialysis department.
  • Electronic Medical Record system: Meditech.
  • Scrubs required: Royal Blue and White.
  • Orientation every Wednesday.
  • Every other week (EOW) requirement applies.
  • Must be able to work within a 50-mile radius of the facility.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Stepdown unit experience, with recent Stepdown experience within the last year.
  • ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience required.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience with peritoneal dialysis.

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID must be carried during hours of service.
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (if signed before 12/14/25) or within 30 days of start (if signed on/after 12/14/25).
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands required.
  • Immunizations and titers required or documented declinations for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer or vaccine series)
    • Varicella
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination or declination (year-round)
    • COVID vaccination or declination
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year required; TB questionnaire required for positive responders.
  • Drug testing: 10-panel within 6 months or 30 days of start depending on contract date; instant tests not accepted.

Documentation and Competencies

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required.
  • Performance evaluation required if previously completed assignments through any agency.
  • Complete employment application/resume required.
  • Skills checklist for applicable unit must be updated annually.
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license.
  • Completion of ~81 Relias program modules prior to first shift and orientation.
  • Badge photo required (no hats, sunglasses, shadows, or altered images).
  • Facility-specific confidentiality and job description forms must be signed.

Additional Notes

  • Floating across Stepdown, ICU, and Medical-Surgical units is mandatory.
  • Patient care involves managing stable ventilators and non-titrating drips.
  • Orientation and training are structured with specific schedules and requirements.

This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with floating and managing complex cardiac and critical care patients in a stepdown setting.
