Description
Registered Nurse - MICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work in a mixed ICU and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) environment with patient ratios varying by acuity:
- ICU ventilated patients: 2:1 ratio
- High acuity patients (Cooling, CRRT): 1:1 ratio
- PCU and general medical/transfer patients: 3-4:1 ratio depending on acuity
- Med-Surg float assignments with typical ratios of 1:5-7 patients
- Required to float between ICU and Med-Surg units as census fluctuates
- Weekend work every other weekend is required
- Holidays are mandatory with no return to office (RTO) in the first two weeks
- Patient diagnoses commonly include COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation
- Special procedures performed include CRRT, hemodialysis, arterial line placement, central venous catheter placement, tracheostomy placement, and chest tube placement
- Use of specialized equipment such as cooling machines, Bair Huggers, massive transfusion protocols, and CRRT
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
- Minimum 1 year of recent Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
Required Skills & Competencies
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response including dysrhythmia interpretation and multi-system organ failure management
- IV therapy skills: arterial line management, blood product administration, central line and PICC line care, IV starts
- Medication administration including continuous IV sedation, emergency meds, procedural sedation, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Neurological care including acute stroke management
- Respiratory care including ventilator management, BiPAP/CPAP assistance, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, and suctioning
- Endocrine/metabolic management including IV insulin protocols
- Gastrointestinal and renal care including management of chronic/acute renal failure and CVVHD/CRRT
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma
- MI LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start (process coordinated via agency)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 30 days of start (annual TB testing not required)
- Immunizations or titers required: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or declination)
- 10-panel drug test including marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam and specialty competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start with passing score of at least 80%
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start
- Fit testing required on-site for applicable roles (not required for non-clinical or certain outpatient roles)
- Vaccine exemption forms must be submitted and approved at least 2 weeks prior to deadline if applicable
Additional Notes
- Patient acuity and nurse-to-patient ratios may vary daily based on census and physician discretion
- ICU patients may remain on ICU unit despite low acuity if physician prefers no handoff
- Floating to Med-Surg units is part of the assignment and done in rotation with facility staff
