Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Cardiac Telemetry
Location: Salisbury, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (12-hour shifts, 18:45 – 07:15)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Fast-paced cardiac and stroke unit with high patient turnover (78 to 90 patients per week).
- Patient assignments typically 1:5-6; nurses must be comfortable managing up to 6 patients during surge.
- Patient population includes stable pre/post cardiac procedure patients (pacemaker implantation, ICDs, cardiac catheterization), post uncomplicated peripheral vascular/cardiac interventions, stable oxygen therapy patients (opti-flow, chronic BiPAP), unstable angina, low-risk chest pain, CHF, dysrhythmias, new CVA and TIA patients.
- Nurses will manage multiple cardiac drips such as Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone.
- Unit currently includes a COVID-positive side with patients on opti-flow and acute BiPAP during surges.
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of telemetry nursing experience, including telemetry experience within the last year.
- Experience working with similar patient ratios and acuity, comfortable managing up to 6 patients (target ratio 1:5–6).
- Current ACLS certification.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience as a travel nurse.
Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification (AHA or American Red Cross).
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification (AHA or American Red Cross).
- NIH Stroke Certification (must be completed annually if required).
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- 13-week contract length.
- 12-hour night shifts, 3 shifts per week, totaling 36 hours.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period.
- Float requirement: nurses must float to other units as needed.
- Call requirement: frequency depends on patient census.
- No block scheduling allowed.
- Self-scheduling with leadership oversight to balance unit needs.
- Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may result in cancellation.
Orientation & Onboarding
- 36 hours of unit orientation required; travelers must be available every day during the first week.
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start.
- Navy blue or white scrubs required; jackets must match uniform color and material.
Equipment & Systems
- Telemetry and pulse oximetry monitoring.
- Use of high flow oxygen (stable patients only), non-rebreather masks (palliative use only), and chronic BiPAP (no new BiPAP initiation).
- Unit uses Pyxis medication system, EPIC Dimensions for documentation, and SBAR communication.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months required for clinical candidates.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required for past positive TB.
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
- Completion of facility-specific education modules including medication safety, confidentiality agreement, annual compliance training, and bloodborne pathogens training.
- Must complete facility onboarding including photo for badge (passport-style photo on white background, business attire).
- Must complete online competency exams including color blindness and medication/pharmacology tests as required.
Additional Notes
- Nurses should be comfortable working in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment with frequent patient turnover.
- The unit has a team lead to assist with admissions and discharges.
- COVID-positive patients are housed on a specific side of the unit during surges.
- Candidates must complete all required documentation and certifications prior to start to avoid delays.
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with cardiac telemetry skills seeking a challenging travel assignment in a busy cardiac/stroke unit.
