Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Provide nursing care primarily for newly diagnosed acute leukemia and hematology oncology adult and geriatric patients.
- Work in a medical unit with a high volume of blood products, IV antibiotics, and electrolyte management.
- Staffing ratio goal: 1 nurse to 4 patients, occasionally 1:5.
- Schedule: 12-hour shifts (day/night rotation possible), approximately 36 hours per week, night shift primarily (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM), 3 shifts per week.
- Self-scheduling requests accepted before final schedule is set; shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs.
- Orientation: First week Monday-Friday dayshift; second week includes 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Special focus on infection prevention and patient falls prevention.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of hematology/oncology nursing experience in an inpatient setting within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current ACLS certification
- ONS Chemotherapy Certification
- Experience with telemetry monitoring
- Proficient in PICC line management
- Experience with central line blood draws
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics with acute leukemia and hematology oncology diagnoses.
Compliance and Background Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting with specific Ohio codes.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers.
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable).
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation).
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31).
- Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026.
- Annual review and signing of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
Orientation and Competency Requirements
- Unit-specific competency exams required, including:
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
- Background check and fingerprinting must be completed and cleared prior to start; pending fingerprint attestations accepted under specific conditions.
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
Additional Information
- Computerized charting system used: EPIC.
- Variable weekend shifts based on unit needs.
- Candidates must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements.
This position is ideal for experienced oncology nurses with chemotherapy certification and telemetry skills who have prior inpatient hematology oncology experience and are seeking a travel contract in Ohio.
