Description
Registered Nurse – Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients
- Approximately 48 beds total (24 PCU + 24 MS Telemetry)
- High acuity patient population with a variety of diagnoses including solid tumors and some blood cancers
- Pediatric patients are extremely rare on this unit; pediatric experience is not required
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
Schedule & Orientation
- Rotating 12-hour shifts: Day (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM) or Night (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week)
- Self-scheduling requests allowed before final schedule posting
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes based on staffing needs and not guaranteed
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Skills & Competencies
- Chemotherapy competence is not required; optional 2-day chemotherapy course available for professional development
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exams required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
Equipment & Technology
- GE B450 monitors with telemetry system
- Bladder scanner
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Continuous bladder irrigation
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps
Patient Care Ratios
- Staffing ratios aim for 1 nurse to 4-5 patients but may vary based on unit needs
- Weekend shifts are variable
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if applicable
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start; must be completed using specific code for home health agency responsible for children or adults
- Education verification: Must be graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring required
- Annual review and signing of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies
- Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, and rubella
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption requires documentation)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 – 3/31)
- Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026; onsite fit testing available if needed
References & Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager, director, or formal leadership role (charge nurse acceptable as second reference)

Note: This position involves working in a high-acuity oncology setting with a focus on medical-surgical and telemetry care. Oncology experience is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates should be prepared for rotating 12-hour shifts and must meet all licensing, certification, and compliance requirements prior to start.
