Behavioral Health Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work on a locked inpatient behavioral health unit caring for adults and geriatrics with all mental health diagnoses.
- Unit spans two floors with varying acuity; staff rotate between floors.
- Team includes psych techs (not CNAs) who assist with vital signs, blood glucose, and milieu management.
- Support available onsite includes nurse manager, assistant nurse manager, house supervisor, and 24/7 virtual clinical nursing support.
- Therapy team conducts groups 7 days per week.
- Use of ObservSmart patient monitoring system, personal panic alarms, and public safety presence.
- Documentation and medication systems: EPIC, Pyxis, SBAR.
Schedule & Work Details
- Shift: Nights, 18:45 to 07:15 (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
- Hours per week: 36-48 hours offered
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Call requirement: Yes
- Floating: May be required to float to med-surg units as needed
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:7
- Orientation: 32 hours hospital orientation during week one; attendance required daily
- Scrubs: Navy blue
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Behavioral Health nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience working on locked inpatient behavioral health units
- Experience with personality disorders, schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and trauma and stressor related disorders
- MOAB (Crisis Prevention Institute - CPI) certification required; must be completed onsite within first 30 days
- Experience with EPIC documentation system
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics with a wide range of mental health diagnoses
Required Compliance & Documentation
- Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative)
- Immunizations or titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination if titer negative/equivocal)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement
- Required certifications: BLS and ACLS (AHA or American Red Cross accepted)
- Medication safety training and competency exams as applicable
- Color blindness testing within 1 year (except non-clinical)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam not required for Behavioral Health specialty
- Employment application and references per agency requirements
Orientation & Training Requirements
- Hospital orientation week one (32 hours) with daily attendance
- MOAB (CPI) certification onsite within first 30 days
- Medication safety module completion with certificate submission
- Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)
- Annual compliance and facility-specific education modules as required
Additional Notes
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation and Do Not Rebook status
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract; must be passport style on white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses
- Badge and facility-specific confidentiality, tobacco-free campus, and hospital policy acknowledgments required
- Floating to med-surg units may be required occasionally
- Team lead and psych techs assist with de-escalation and patient monitoring
This position is ideal for a Behavioral Health RN with at least 2 years of experience seeking a night shift travel assignment in a locked inpatient psychiatric setting. First-time travelers are welcome.
