Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Night Shift)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
- Patient diagnoses include AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, Diabetic foot ulcers, and more.
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection may be required.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6.
- Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45–7:15).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
- Call requirement: Must be available for call if called off on a prescheduled shift.
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED).
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm/Hurricane Team and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Experience in an inpatient setting.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Preferred Qualifications
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
- Charge nurse experience
Orientation & Uniform
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
Systems Used
- PYXIS (medication system)
- EPIC (electronic health record)
- SBAR (communication tool)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required for past positive TB.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
- Completion of medication safety training and annual compliance training.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (approx. 8-10 hours).
- Must complete flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask-wearing requirement during flu season.
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport-style photo on white background).
- Must complete corporate ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials.
Additional Notes
- Shifts called out must be made up.
- Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed.
- Radiation badge not required for this position.
- Candidates must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, high census environment where ratios may increase.
This position offers a challenging opportunity for experienced Med/Surg RNs with oncology skills who are flexible and able to work nights, weekends, and float as needed in a dynamic inpatient setting.
