Laboratory Technologist (MLT or MT) - Contract
Location: Machias, Maine
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Evenings with rotating weekends
Job Summary
The Laboratory Technologist performs laboratory tests and reports results to assist in diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. Responsibilities include general laboratory operations, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance. After probation, the technologist may supervise waived, moderate, and high complexity testing.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform complex tests in hematology, immunohematology, immunology, bacteriology, microscopy, routine chemistry, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
- Conduct phlebotomies including arterial, capillary, and venipunctures using age-appropriate techniques.
- Process specimens following established protocols.
- Calibrate, standardize, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments.
- Perform quality control and preventive maintenance.
- Prepare and maintain reagent supplies.
- Validate and report test results accurately and timely.
- Assist in developing laboratory policies and procedures.
- Orient and teach students and new employees.
- Research and develop new procedures as assigned.
- Follow safety practices including biohazard handling, blood-borne pathogen exposure control, infection control, chemical hygiene, and hazard communication.
- Promote effective teamwork within and across departments.
- Attend required inservice education and stay informed on policies and updates.
- Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality, including flexibility to extend shifts when necessary.
- Perform duties safely and comply with all safety policies and procedures.
- Adhere to professional conduct and hospital policies.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related specialty from an accredited institution.
- Certification or eligibility for certification/registration as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) (e.g., AMT or ASCP).
- Minimum of 2 years of Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) experience, including experience within the last year.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds independently.
- Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 and color vision required.
- Ability to walk, stand, kneel, bend frequently.
- Fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary for job functions.
- Ability to work in limited space with frequent interruptions.
- Adaptability to temperature variations and moderate noise from laboratory equipment.
Exposure Risk
- Category I exposure risk to blood-borne pathogens.
Quality Improvement and Compliance
- Maintain current knowledge of quality improvement programs.
- Collaborate on departmental and hospital-wide quality improvement activities.
- Adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Follow compliance, privacy, and security policies.
- Report any compliance or confidentiality concerns appropriately.
