Registered Nurse – PCU (Bloomington, Indiana)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work on a mixed acuity 4E PCU/MedSurg unit, comfortable managing both PCU and MedSurg patients.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:5.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
- Must float within scope to meet facility needs.
- Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
- Locals not accepted.
- Pending license accepted if Indiana, compact, or temporary license is obtained prior to start.
- Guaranteed hours vary between 36 to 48 hours per week depending on shift pattern.
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Patient diagnoses include cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiology, endocrine, and oncology.
- Unit includes CVICU with patients post-CABG, TAVR, SAVR, MVR, VATS, and flex acuity MedSurg, progressive, and ICU cardiovascular and oncology patients.
- Special procedures involve care of post-cardiac surgery patients, dysrhythmia interpretation, arterial line management, blood product administration, central and PICC line care, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
- Preferred experience with Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump, pre/post cardiac catheterization/intervention, sheath removal, ventricular assist devices (LVAD/RVAD/Impella), ventilator management, and care of ventilated patients.
- Previous charge nurse experience preferred.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Indiana.
- Minimum 1.5 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with PCU experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience managing post-cardiac surgery patients (directly or indirectly from OR).
- Experience with transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation/replacement (TAVI/TAVR).
- Experience in arterial line management.
- Experience in central line care/management.
- Experience in PICC line management.
- Experience titrating cardiac drips.
- Experience titrating vasoactive drips.
- Med Surg experience.
Schedule & Work Conditions
- 3x12 hour night shifts per week.
- Floating within scope as needed.
- Every other weekend required.
- Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
- All private rooms with overhead lifts.
- Telemetry monitoring available.
Facility & Environment
- Short-term acute care hospital with 210 staffed beds.
- Charting system: Cerner.
- Free parking.
- Dress code: black bottoms and red top scrub.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
- Background check within 90 days including 7-year work/lived history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, education verification.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
- Official transcript or diploma (may be pending at start).
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
- Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start.
- Fit test for approved respirators within 12 months.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tuberculosis test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray and documentation required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30–3/31). Declinations not accepted.
- References: minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles, verified within 2 years.
- Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days.
- Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually.
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality forms prior to start.

- Locals are not accepted for this travel assignment.
- Pending licenses are accepted but must be obtained before starting.
- Floating within scope is required to meet unit needs.
- Previous charge nurse experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024 except for perioperative/OR and allied/ambulatory RN travelers. This position is not exempt from that rule.
