Description
Registered Nurse - MS/Tele (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Position supports the Emergency Department (ED) Holding unit within a float pool.
- Patients are adults with medical/surgical diagnoses awaiting inpatient beds; may include PCU level patients.
- Responsibilities include caring for MS/Telemetry patients and floating to ED and MedSurg areas as needed.
- Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM), totaling 48 hours per week.
- Patient Ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele patients or 1:4 for PCU level patients.
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend.
- Maximum Return to Office (RTO) allowed: 7 days.
- Contract staff may be required to participate in Storm/Hurricane Teams or disaster response.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- ACLS certification
- Experience with PICC line management
- Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Proficiency in respiratory support including CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), non-invasive airway management, portable oxygen tank use, and tracheostomy management
Preferred Qualifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with IV insulin protocols
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management
- Accessing ports and central line blood draws
- Starting IVs
- Care for neurological and trauma patients (CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury)
- Orthopedic trauma and total joint replacements
- Wound care including Wound Vac
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 12 hours
- Must complete facility-specific education modules prior to start (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care).
- Required to wear navy scrubs.
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Adult medical/surgical patients in ED holding area awaiting inpatient beds.
- Mixed acuity with potential PCU level patients.
- Unit uses standard cardiac monitors, IV pumps, and other monitoring systems.
- Documentation and communication systems include Pyxis, Epic, and SBAR.
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, additional requirements apply.
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required within 1 year.
- Immunization and titer requirements:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: titer or 2 vaccines required; boosters required if titers negative/equivocal. Declinations not accepted.
- Hepatitis B: titer, vaccination series, or facility-specific declination form required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required; exemptions require mask wearing on campus.
- Required to complete annual compliance and facility-specific education modules.
- Must complete confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and other facility policies.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete medication safety training and provide certificate of completion.
- Must complete competency exams as applicable (medication, dysrhythmia/EKG).
- Must provide professional references as per agency requirements.
- Employment application must be submitted and processed through agency system.
- May be required to complete crisis prevention training (CPI/MOAB) if assigned to ER or behavioral health units.

- This is a high-acuity, fast-paced float pool position requiring flexibility to work across multiple units.
- Candidates will be interviewed due to high turnover rate.
- Prior travel experience is not required for this position.
