Description
Job Opportunity: Hospice Registered Nurse
Location: Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Provide and coordinate home nursing care according to physician orders and agency policies.
- Directly supervise and evaluate Home Health Aides and Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses.
- Conduct home visits with an average patient load of 5-8 patients per day.
- Types of visits include Start of Care, Wound Care, and Follow-up Visits.
- Must have reliable transportation, a current driver’s license, and required liability insurance.
- Travel radius up to 75 miles from the home clinic; approximately 600 miles traveled weekly.
- Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (5x8 hours).
- On-call requirement: One night per week.
- Dress code: Scrubs.
- Charting system: Proficiency required in HomeCare HomeBase (HCHB) and OASIS (used within last 6 months or retraining required).
- Weekend work varies; discuss during interview.
- Local candidates accepted under the same terms.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alabama.
- Minimum of 1 year of hospice nursing experience within the last year.
- Experience working with adult patients in a home health setting.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Proficiency with HomeCare HomeBase (HCHB) documentation system.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and up-to-date personal or auto insurance under candidate’s name or listing candidate as a driver.
- Background checks including 7-year history, sex offender search, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific searches as applicable.
- Fingerprinting required per state regulations (varies by state).
- Education verification for nursing degree.
- Drug screening: 10-panel drug test required.
- Health documents:
- Physical exam within 12 months confirming good health and no communicable diseases.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months.
- Immunizations or titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or documented declination.
- COVID-19 vaccination series or declination.
- Completion of agency-specific compliance training, policy acknowledgments, confidentiality agreements, and quizzes prior to start.
- References: Two professional references required.
- Work history verification for at least the last 7 years or two most recent employers.
Additional Notes
- The position covers a central Alabama territory with a 50-mile radius from the office location.
- Productivity expectations: 22-25 points per week based on patient visits and activities.
- No guaranteed hours; if patient census is low, contractor may be floated to nearby clinics to pick up hours.
- Candidates must sign new supplier packets at the start of each assignment and annually if working more than one consecutive year.
This role is ideal for experienced hospice RNs with recent specialty experience who are comfortable with travel within the specified radius and working independently in home health settings.
