Description
Registered Nurse – Med Tele
Location: Iron Mountain, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, rotating day (7:00 AM–7:00 PM) and night (7:00 PM–7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit Type: Medical Telemetry (24 inpatient beds, plus up to 10 observation/day surgeries)
Unit & Patient Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 5:1
- Night shift (11 PM): 6:1
- Team nursing model with LPNs (ratio 2 LPNs to 7 RNs)
- Common diagnoses:
- Nursing home patients, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU issues, pacemaker patients, sepsis
- Day surgeries: Orthopedics (hips and knees), cholecystectomy, appendectomy, TURPS-CBI
- Small pediatric population (3/year) – only assigned to travelers with prior pediatric experience or if no other options
- Limited onsite resources: No IV team; RN must be comfortable with IV starts
- Respiratory Therapist available 24/7; RT oversees entire hospital
- Telemetry monitoring: Basic arrhythmia knowledge required; physical monitor at nurse’s desk
- Hospitalist or Intensivist coverage until 6 PM daily; telemedicine coverage after 6 PM
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Medical/Surgical or Medical Telemetry nursing (acute care experience)
- Preferred experience or knowledge of TURPS-CBI procedures
- Preferred experience in Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 settings
- Current BLS certification required (AHA)
- ACLS certification preferred
- Must be able to float to like units and patient populations
- Charge nurse role includes patient assignment; travelers may be placed as relief charge nurse
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Weekend rotation every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
- Holiday coverage required (approximately 2 out of 3 holidays)
- Potential call or standby responsibilities
- Unit-specific orientation:
- Day 1: 8 hours computer education + 4 hours shadowing
- Day 2: 12-hour orientation shift
- Day 3: Independent work
- Dress code: Solid professional attire, no specific color required
- Must clock in and out at the facility
Additional Notes
- Prior experience working at this facility requires a minimum 6-month gap before reapplying
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Nurse aides are present on the unit
This position is suitable for experienced Med Tele RNs comfortable with acute care, telemetry monitoring, and working in a resource-limited environment with a diverse patient population.
