Description

Registered Nurse – MedSurg/Telemetry (Travel/Contract)

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 – 7:15), 4 shifts per week (48 hours/week)
Patient Ratio: 1:6


Job Description

  • Care primarily for stroke patients and various neurological diagnoses including neurosurgery, epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas.
  • Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU); training provided but typically does not affect travelers unless trained.
  • Float requirement: Must float to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units. Frequent floating may be required.
  • Travelers required to work every other weekend; if weekend call-offs occur, shifts must be made up either the same week or at contract end.
  • Block scheduling is not always guaranteed.
  • Unit systems used: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR.
  • Navy scrubs required.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum of 1 year of MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
  • Completion of 2 or more prior travel nursing assignments.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 36 hours.
  • Medication safety training and other facility-specific education modules required prior to or during orientation.
  • Must complete background checks including local, federal, and national criminal databases, education verification, and drug screening within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start required; if past positive TB, additional testing and documentation required.
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required.
  • Immunization requirements: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccines; Hepatitis B titer or facility-specific declination; annual flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement.
  • Must complete required facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete North Carolina Division of Medical Assistance and NC Healthcare Personnel Registry searches within 90 days prior to start.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel acute care nurses.
  • Floating to other units and weekend work required; call-offs may result in contract cancellation.
  • Must comply with facility dress code and badge photo requirements (passport-style photo on white background, business attire).
