Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Neuro Unit)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work on a Neuro unit with patient diagnoses primarily in general medicine and neurology.
  • Night shift available: 4 shifts of 12 hours each (18:45 to 7:15).
  • Shift options: 36 or 48 hours per week; if 48 hours, overtime is billed only after 48 hours.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:6.
  • Float requirement: Travelers float first.
  • Weekend requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend).
  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation.
  • Contract staff expected to participate in Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Orientation: 24 hours.
  • Scrubs color: Navy Blue.
  • Unit systems used: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR.
  • Scheduling: Manager schedules.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • ACLS certification.
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Certification (annual completion preferred).
  • Neuro experience preferred.
  • Experience or willingness to learn the charge nurse role preferred.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start; onsite fit testing available if needed.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal. Declinations not accepted.
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, series, or facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal.
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required annually; mask required if exemption approved.
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must score 82% or higher; three attempts allowed).
  • Color blindness testing within 1 year via Relias.
  • Employment application and references per Aya Healthcare requirements.

Orientation and Training

  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation checklist (8-10 hours for acute candidates).
  • Medication Safety module completion required with certificate submission.
  • Annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules required.
  • Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and tobacco-free campus acknowledgment must be signed.
  • Corporate ID and I-Learn account setup required prior to start, including proof of login.
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses).

Additional Notes

  • Travelers may be consolidated to centralized office mid-contract and preassigned to units as needed.
  • Must be prepared to work in emergency response teams during disasters.
  • Navy blue scrubs required on unit.
  • No overtime billed until after 48 hours if working 48-hour shifts.
  • RTO (Return to Office) restrictions strictly enforced; violations may lead to contract cancellation.
