Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
• Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:4-5
  • Night shift: 1:5-6
• Nurse aids/patient care techs support with ratios:

  • Days and evenings: 1:9-10
  • Nights: 1:10-12
• Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
• Respiratory equipment includes high flow oxygen (rarely used for stable COVID patients)

Schedule & Work Conditions

• 12-hour night shifts
• Approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
• Holiday requirement: every other holiday
• No call or standby requirement
• Floating: participates in float rotation within general unit; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
• Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
• Dress code: no scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
• BLS (AHA) certification
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Level 1 trauma experience required
• Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
• Previous experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
• Experience titrating drips, including heparin drip based on PTT
• Must understand and comply with a drug-free workplace policy (negative drug screen required)

Additional Notes

• Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
• Call-off policy: equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty

This position is ideal for experienced neuro med-surg RNs with prior travel experience seeking a night shift role in a busy neuroscience-focused acute care unit.
