Description
Registered Nurse - MS/Tele (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Position in an Emergency Department (ED) Holding Support unit within the float pool.
- Patients are adults with any medical/surgical diagnosis, including PCU level patients.
- Responsibilities include caring for MS/Telemetry patients and floating to ED and MedSurg areas as needed.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele patients, 1:4 for PCU level patients.
- Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM), totaling 48 hours per week.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
- Maximum Return to Office (RTO) after booking: 7 days (no working out RTO onsite).
- Contract staff may be required to participate in Storm/Hurricane Teams or disaster response.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience
- Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Preferred Qualifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- IV insulin protocols.
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management.
- Accessing ports and central line blood draws.
- Starting IVs.
- Experience with CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic trauma, total joint replacements.
- Wound care and wound vac management.
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 12 hours.
- Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start (minimum 82% score required, up to 3 attempts allowed).
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable.
- Color blindness testing required within 1 year prior to start.
- Background checks required within 90 days prior to start, including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB).
- Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) required within 1 year prior to start.
- Drug screening within 30 days prior to start (10-panel, negative result required).
- Immunizations and titers required: Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol.
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Manager schedules shifts.
- Scrubs color: Navy.
- Unit uses Pyxis for medication dispensing, Epic for documentation, and SBAR for communication.
- Standard equipment includes cardiac monitors, IV pumps, and other monitoring systems.
- High acuity, mixed patient population with high turnover.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete facility-specific education modules and compliance training prior to start.
- Must complete confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and hospital policies acknowledgment.
- Must provide a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation immediately after signing contract.
- May be required to complete crisis prevention training (CPI/MOAB) if assigned to ER or behavioral health units.
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years for travel/per diem acute care RNs.
- Employment application must be uploaded.
Important Notes
- No Return to Office (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in contract cancellation.
- Candidates will be interviewed due to high turnover and acuity.
- Contract staff may be reassigned mid-contract based on facility needs.
This position is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses comfortable with telemetry, emergency department holding units, and floating across medical-surgical and ED areas.
