Description

Registered Nurse - MICU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in a mixed ICU and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) environment with patient ratios varying by acuity:
    • ICU ventilated patients: 2:1 ratio
    • High acuity patients (Cooling, CRRT): 1:1 ratio
    • PCU and general medical/transfer patients: 3:1 to 4:1 ratio depending on acuity
    • Med-Surg float assignments with typical ratios of 1:5-7 patients
  • Required to float between ICU and Med-Surg units as census fluctuates
  • Weekend work every other weekend is required
  • Holidays are mandatory
  • No Return to Office (RTO) in the first two weeks of assignment; all RTO must be approved prior to offer
  • Patient diagnoses commonly include COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation
  • ICU physician may retain patients with low acuity in ICU, affecting patient grouping

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Michigan
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (American Heart Association)
    • BLS (American Heart Association)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide government-issued photo ID and proof of application for Michigan RN license if pending
  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, SSN trace, national and state criminal searches, sex offender registry, education verification, and motor vehicle record
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not typically for ICU RN)
  • Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Drug screening: 10-panel including marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine proof
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 30 days of start
    • Annual TB questionnaire
    • Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity proof (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B titer, series, or declination form
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (medical/spiritual) for candidates starting after November 1
  • Completion of medication and specialty competency exams within 1 year prior to assignment start with passing score of at least 80%
  • One professional reference from a direct supervisor or manager required
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Night shift, 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
  • Floating between ICU and Med-Surg units as needed
  • Patient acuity and ratios vary; ventilated and high acuity patients require closer monitoring
  • Holidays are mandatory
  • No RTO during first two weeks; all RTO must be approved before offer

  • First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply
  • Patient care involves complex critical care skills and use of specialized equipment such as cooling machines, Bair Huggers, and CRRT
