Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Overview
- Holiday coverage is required; flexibility during holidays to accommodate staffing demands.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
- No call requirement.
- Floating to Medical-Surgical (MS), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Emergency Department (ED) as needed.
- Patient ratios typically 1:6, may flex higher occasionally; support staff available in rare cases.
- First-time travelers are welcome.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 1.5 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Competency in colostomy care.
- Competency in feeding tube care and management.
- Experience with pre- and post-hemodialysis management.
- Ability to access ports.
- Blood product administration skills.
- Peripheral line care and management.
- PICC line management.
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) management.
- Surgical drain management.
- Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac).
- Flexibility to manage patient ratios up to 1:6 or higher with support staff.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete medication test/pharmacology competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%.
- Competency exam in specialty required within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/T-Spot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required.
- Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine.
- Proof of immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella.
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or declination form required.
- 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1.
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.
Floating & Coverage Details
- Will float to other units including MS, ICU, and ED waiting areas.
- Must be comfortable with flexible patient ratios and varied patient acuity.
Background & Compliance Checks
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
- Education verification required.
- Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not typically for RN MS role).
- Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric and certain specialty placements (not applicable here).
Facility Policies & Documentation
- Review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start.
- Fit test required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC) if applicable.
- Vaccine exemption forms must be submitted and approved if declining flu or Hepatitis B vaccines.
- Personal or auto insurance required only for Home Health roles (not applicable here).
Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
- No call shifts required.
- Holiday work is mandatory with flexibility.
- Support staff available to assist during higher patient ratios.
This position offers an opportunity for a Medical-Surgical RN with solid post-surgical skills and telemetry experience to work a travel contract in Michigan with a reputable healthcare facility.
