Behavioral Health Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job
Location: Salisbury, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (12-hour shifts, 18:45 - 07:15)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Patient Diagnoses: Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression
Unit Systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR
Job Details
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:8
- Call requirement: None
- Float requirement: Yes, float to other units such as Medical Unit, Emergency Department Behavioral Health (EDBH), or geriatric Behavioral Health unit
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Orientation: 24 hours unit orientation plus hospital orientation week one (traveler must attend daily classes)
- Scrubs: Solid print navy blue or white
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Behavioral Health experience with a minimum of 2 years, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Compliance and Screening Requirements
- Background checks including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Physical exam: Within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and updated annually
- TB testing: Negative PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days, updated annually
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal; declinations not accepted
- Hepatitis B: Titer or series; if negative/equivocal titer, must sign facility-specific Hep B declination
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season; exemptions require medical or religious documentation and mask-wearing if approved
- Fit testing: N95 mask fit test within 1 year or completion of PAPR training (not accepted at all facilities)
Orientation and Training Requirements
- Hospital orientation week one with daily classes
- Unit-specific orientation (24 hours)
- Medication Safety training with certificate of completion required
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) MOAB course required for Behavioral Health nurses, to be completed onsite within first 30 days
- Competency exams as applicable, including medication and pharmacology competency
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam not required for Behavioral Health specialty
- Annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules required
Scheduling and Time Off
- RTO (Request Time Off) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite
- Maximum RTO allowed for auto-offer: 7 days
- Any call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation and Do Not Rebook (DNR) status
Additional Notes
- Candidates must provide a passport-style photo on a solid white background for badge creation (North Carolina facilities)
- Candidates must complete facility-specific confidentiality agreements, education rosters, tobacco-free campus acknowledgements, and other required documents prior to start
- Float assignments may include medical and behavioral health units within the facility
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions
This position is ideal for Behavioral Health RNs with at least 2 years of experience who are comfortable working night shifts in a psychiatric setting and are willing to float to related units. First-time travel nurses are welcome.
