Description
Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Oncology Focus)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45–7:15)
Patient Ratio: 1:6 (may increase with census)
Unit Census: Approximately 42 patients daily
Job Overview
- Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
- Patient diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, malignant neoplasms, diabetic foot ulcers, and more.
- Responsibilities include administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, injection).
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations such as inpatient holding in the ED.
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
- Every other weekend required.
- Must participate in Storm Team/Hurricane Team assignments and may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings expected.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year.
- Experience in an inpatient setting.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Skills and experience in:
- Colostomy care
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- PICC line management
- Surgical drain management
- Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Non-invasive airway management
- Ability to administer chemotherapy if needed.
Orientation & Uniform
- Orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
Systems Used
- PYXIS (medication dispensing)
- EPIC (electronic health records)
- SBAR (communication tool)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
- Completion of medication safety training and other facility-specific education modules.
- Must complete annual compliance and confidentiality agreements.
- Must provide a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation immediately after signing contract.
- Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials.
Additional Notes
- Shifts called out must be made up.
- Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed.
- Candidates must be prepared to float to inpatient holding areas and alternate medical patient care locations.
- Participation in disaster response teams is mandatory.
