Travel Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with a strong neuro critical care background for a Neuro ICU unit specializing in stroke and neurosurgery patient care. This is a night shift position with 12-hour shifts (18:45 – 07:15), averaging 36 hours per week.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience, with Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Skills and clinical competencies:
    • Ventilator management
    • IV starts
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line care/management
    • Continuous IV sedation
    • Stroke and acute CVA management
    • External ventricular drains (EVD)
    • Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring

Unit & Patient Details

  • Patient Diagnoses: Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (including SAH), subdural hematomas, craniotomies, carotid stents and endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, myasthenia gravis
  • Special Equipment: EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino ICP monitor, LICOX, NICOM, Arctic Sun
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census
  • Average Daily Census: 11-12 patients
  • Unit Systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Shift: Night shift, 12 hours (18:45 – 07:15)
  • Hours: 36 hours per week (3 shifts)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Float Requirement: Yes
  • Call Requirement: None
  • Orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
  • Dress Code: Navy blue and white scrubs
  • RTO (Return to Office) Policy: No RTO after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
  • Drug screening (9-panel, within 6 months)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
  • Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Physical exam (per travel agency standards)
  • Medication Safety training certificate
  • Competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must score 82% or higher)
  • Color blindness testing within 1 year
  • References and performance evaluations as applicable
  • Facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, annual compliance training, and education modules
  • Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required immediately after signing contract
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials

Important Notes

  • This unit is a comprehensive stroke center with a large stroke patient population.
  • Candidates without strong neuro ICU experience or less than 2 years in neuro ICU should not be submitted.
  • Candidates must be comfortable with flexible patient ratios up to 3:1 during high census.
  • Prior travel experience is mandatory; no first-time travelers accepted.
  • Must pass EKG competency exam within 72 hours of assignment start; three attempts allowed before cancellation.
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season; exemptions require mask-wearing on campus.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with a strong background in neuro critical care and prior travel nursing experience, seeking a night shift travel assignment in North Carolina.
