Registered Nurse - PCU (Winston Salem, North Carolina)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 - 07:15)

Job Description
- Work on a mixed acuity unit with PCU and Med-Surg/Telemetry patients.
- Patient population includes COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, respiratory distress, COVID-19 (including positive patients), flu, pulmonary embolisms, acute respiratory failure, and patients with chest tubes, CPAP, BiPAP, and telemetry monitoring.
- Unit size: 48 beds.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-5; may go to 1:6 in extreme situations.
- Float requirement: Must float to like units.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
- Unit orientation: 24 hours.
- Block scheduling can be accommodated based on unit needs.
- Resources available: Admission/Discharge nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, Vascular Access Team, Respiratory Therapists, Code Team, Behavioral Health Team.
- Ventilator patients are chronic trach/vent; nurses will not have more than one vent patient at a time.
- Special equipment includes chest tubes, drips (dopamine, cardizem, heparin), vents, trachs, bipaps/cpaps.
- Unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR.
- Scrubs: Not provided; white or navy blue recommended.
- RTO (Return to Office) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation.
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with at least 1 year of PCU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience with ventilator care (vents)
- Experience with CPAP/BiPAP management
Preferred Qualifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred.
Compliance and Screening Requirements
- Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
- Drug screening required within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required and updated annually.
- Fit testing required (N95 mask within 1 year or completion of PAPR training).
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (titer or series or facility-specific declination), Flu vaccination or approved exemption.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes.
- Flu exemption requests accepted with medical or religious documentation; approved exemptions require mask wearing on campus.
- Must complete medication safety training and provide certificate of completion.
- Must complete annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for NC travel candidates).
- Must complete required competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must pass with 82% or higher within 72 hours of start).
- Must complete color blindness testing within 1 year.
Additional Requirements
- Float to like units required.
- Weekend work every other weekend required.
- Must provide professional references as per agency requirements.
- Employment application must be uploaded prior to start.
- Must complete facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and dress code review (if applicable).
- Badge photo required immediately after signing contract; must meet specific photo criteria (passport style, white background, business attire).
- Must complete Corp ID and I-Learn account setup within 72 hours of contract signing.
Patient Care Environment
- Higher acuity med-surg unit with team lead (1:3 ratio), assistant nurse manager, respiratory therapists, and other support staff on shift including weekends.
- Care for patients with complex respiratory needs and telemetry monitoring.
- Team-based care model with multiple support resources available.
This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for experienced Registered Nurses comfortable with higher acuity med-surg and telemetry patients, including ventilator and respiratory support care, working night shifts in a supportive team environment.
