Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (36 hours/week)
  • Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Night shift: 7:30 PM – 7:30 AM
  • No on-call required
  • Patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Medical ICU experience (highest stated requirement)
  • EPIC electronic health record experience required

Required Certifications

  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS) – AHA only
  • All certifications must be current and meet facility standards

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient in IV starts
  • Experience with telemetry monitoring
  • Competency with ventilators
  • Completion of Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exams required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)

  • GE Cardiac Monitor
  • GE Ventilator
  • Boom lift available in each patient room

Required Licensure and Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
  • Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader
  • Annual review and signing of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
  • Annual TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal
  • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12) required; exemptions not allowed for infant or pregnant patient care
  • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, and Rubella (with booster requirements if low titers)
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation
  • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (signed declination acceptable)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 – 3/31); mask required if declining
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
  • Fit mask test required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026; onsite fit testing available if needed
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Notes

  • Parking permits and options available but subject to change (not included here)
  • Fingerprinting results typically take 1-2 weeks; delays possible if background hits occur
  • Candidates with gaps in service over 90 days require new fingerprinting if prior results are older than 1 year
  • Onsite fit testing available during first week if fit test is not current or acceptable

This position is ideal for experienced Medical ICU RNs comfortable with critical care technology, EPIC documentation, and complex patient populations requiring advanced life support and specialized interventions.
