Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Nurse aids/patient care techs support with ratios:
- Days and evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are used house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment includes high flow for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Schedule & Work Conditions
- 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: participates in float rotation within general unit; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Dress code: no scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Must have level 1 trauma experience
- Must have prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
- Must have prior travel nursing experience (no first-time travelers accepted)
- Experience with titrating drips required, including heparin drip titrated based on PTT
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips
- Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
- House supervisor present 24/7
Licensing & Compliance
- Active Illinois RN license required or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- Must comply with drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen for all panels
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
This position is ideal for experienced neuro med-surg RNs with trauma and travel nursing backgrounds seeking a 13-week assignment on a busy neuroscience-focused acute care unit.
