Description

Day Shift Med/Surg RN

Location: Pagosa Springs, Colorado
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 0630 to 1830, 3 days per week (36 hours/week)


Job Summary

Provide observation and inpatient care to patients on the Medical-Surgical unit. Responsibilities include patient assessment, prioritization, administering nursing care and procedures, monitoring and reassessing patients, documenting changes, patient and family education, collaborating with providers, and supporting continuity of care to help prevent readmission.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Colorado
  • Minimum 5 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Emergency Department (ED) experience
  • Previous travel nursing experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Experience with Cerner electronic health record system

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care within RN scope and per physician/provider orders
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, care planning, nursing interventions, reassessments, and evaluations
  • Monitor patients for condition changes and report abnormalities promptly
  • Administer medications, IV therapy, oxygen therapy, blood products, and other treatments accurately and timely
  • Operate infusion pumps and document accurately in the electronic health record
  • Complete required Cerner documentation and use Care Compass for organizing assessments, care tasks, procedures, and patient education
  • Deliver age-specific nursing care including cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation, taking appropriate action as needed
  • Educate patients and families on disease processes, treatment plans, medications, pain management, wound care, discharge planning, and follow-up care
  • Transfer care using SBAR format when appropriate
  • Follow infection prevention practices, universal precautions, and National Patient Safety Goals
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and protect patient rights, dignity, and privacy
  • Collaborate with providers, staff, and other departments to support interdisciplinary care
  • Serve as a mentor to other nursing staff and support continuous learning

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Hospital setting with exposure to work and environmental stress, frequent interruptions, moderate noise, and regular communication with patients, employees, vendors, and the public
  • Ability to perform heavy work including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and assisting with patient movement and positioning
  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, radiation, chemicals, hazardous materials, verbal or physical abuse, and physical strain related to patient care
