Job Opportunity: Surgical Services Specialty RN

Location: Pagosa Springs, Colorado
Employment Type: Contract (13 weeks)
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts with rotating start times
Work Setting: Clinic environment with some support for surgical and procedural care coordination


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Surgical Services Specialty RN to support Pain Management and Surgical Services. The role involves coordinating care from initial clinic visits through surgery and follow-up, acting as a nurse navigator to ensure continuity of care. The position requires collaboration with specialty providers, medical assistants, schedulers, nurse anesthetists, and other key stakeholders.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate patient care across the specialty service line from clinic visit through surgery/procedure and follow-up
  • Serve as liaison between care team, surgical services, providers, and patients
  • Provide nursing care within RN scope: assessment, care planning, treatment support, monitoring, reassessment, and patient/family education
  • Follow up on patient orders, referrals, prior authorizations, and documentation
  • Review chart preparation including order and insurance authorization verification, lab/radiology orders
  • Triage patient phone calls and route messages via electronic health record (EHR)
  • Respond promptly to patient portal messages
  • Assist with medication administration, dose calculations, and accurate documentation in EHR
  • Educate patients on medical conditions, procedures, post-procedure care, and rehabilitation goals
  • Complete intake assessments, patient histories, medication/allergy reconciliation, and surgical/procedure history documentation
  • Submit booking sheets for procedures, injections, and surgeries as directed
  • Initiate and complete medication prior authorizations and durable medical equipment (DME) paperwork
  • Maintain clean, stocked, and prepared exam/procedure rooms, including sterile fields when required
  • Support clinical staff through training, education, mentoring, and collaboration
  • Maintain confidentiality, patient safety, infection prevention, and professional communication

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Colorado
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinic experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience in an outpatient setting
  • One completed travel nursing assignment
  • Previous travel nursing experience
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Experience with Cerner documentation system
  • Experience in Pain Management

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced clinic setting with exposure to work and environmental stress
  • Frequent interruptions and communication with patients, families, providers, vendors, and public
  • Requires strong organizational skills, clinical judgment, communication, and ability to work independently

This position is ideal for a seasoned RN with surgical services and care coordination experience who is comfortable navigating both clinic and procedural environments. Prior travel nursing experience is mandatory.
