Job Opportunity: ER Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Towson, Maryland
Contract Length: 10 weeks
Start Date: July 20, 2026
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Description

  • Work in the Emergency Room (ER) setting.
  • Patient population ranges from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Average daily census: 30 patients.
  • Unit size: 40 beds.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4.
  • Common patient diagnoses include respiratory issues, cardiac events (MI, STEMI, Non-STEMI), stroke, chest pain, surgical cases, and psych patients (up to 6 psych patients in ED at times).
  • Trauma cases are less frequent; trauma center located 10 minutes away.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training required for staff due to presence of psychiatric patients.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland.
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Patient Care Competencies

  • Must be competent in managing patients with respiratory, cardiac, stroke, and trauma-related conditions.
  • Familiarity with stroke protocols and TPA administration.
  • Ability to care for psychiatric patients in the ED setting.

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol (annual updates required).
  • Up-to-date immunizations or proof of immunity for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer or declination accepted)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required if working with pediatric patients or ED pediatric population)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for the 2025-26 season.
  • Negative drug screen (9 or 10 panel plus Fentanyl) within 30 days prior to start (instant tests not accepted).
  • Fit testing for N95 masks required within 1 year prior to start.

Documentation and Background Checks

  • Two supervisory references within 1 year of start (one must be a supervisor/manager, the other can be a charge RN directly supervised).
  • Employment history verification for the past 7 years.
  • Agency application or resume completed within 30 days of start.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, SSN trace, nationwide and county searches, sex offender registry, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and education verification.
  • Maryland State Exclusions List check within 30 days of start.
  • Facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreements, badge photo, and IT confidentiality agreement must be completed timely.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must complete a medication/pharmacology competency exam and age-specific competency exam with a minimum score of 80%.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start.
  • Facility requires completion of a respiratory protection questionnaire signed by a medical professional.
  • Epic training test-out option available for eligible candidates.
  • Timely completion of all required documentation is critical to avoid delays in credentialing and orientation.

This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work nights in a busy ER with a diverse patient population, including critical cardiac and stroke cases as well as psychiatric patients. The facility supports first-time travel nurses and provides a structured orientation and compliance process.
