Description

Registered Nurse - PACU (Charlotte, North Carolina)

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 18 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work setting: Ambulatory/Outpatient Surgery Center
  • Patient age groups: Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
  • Patient diagnoses: Eye and ENT patients
  • Special procedures: Bone marrow transplants (BMTs), tonsils, adenoids, sinus, cataracts
  • Unit census: Average 40 patients/day, 9 rooms/beds
  • Unit closes on 11/25/2026 (required end date)
  • No call or weekend requirements
  • Float to other local ambulatory surgery centers in Charlotte area as needed (rarely)
  • Scheduling: Per unit needs
  • Orientation: 3 days on unit
  • Scrubs provided
  • No computerized system on unit

Shift Details

  • 8-hour day shifts only (no nights)
  • Shift times: 06:00 - 14:30 and 07:30 - 16:00 (mix of both)
  • Options: 4x8 or 5x8 shifts available

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Current certifications: ALS, BLS (issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross), and PALS
  • Experience in an outpatient setting
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Knowledge and skills related to malignant hyperthermia protocol
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

  • Experience in Pediatric PACU, Phase I and Phase II recovery
  • Surgery cases: ENT, General, Ophthalmology
  • ENT skills: Tonsillectomy care
  • Ophthalmology skills: Cataract extraction/implant, eye trauma
  • Pediatric patient management
  • Respiratory skills: Airway assessment, oral/nasal airway placement
  • Anesthesia types: General, Local, Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC)
  • Additional pre/post-op skills: Follow-up phone calls, 12-lead EKG/ECG, pre/post-operative procedures
  • Medications: Emergency meds, narcotics/opioid analgesics, reversal agents

Important Notes

  • RTO (Return to Office) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation
  • Must pass EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82% (three attempts allowed)
  • Candidate must pass color blindness testing within 1 year prior to start
  • Drug screening: 9-panel within 6 months of start required
  • Physical exam not required for this crisis profile
  • Required immunizations and health screenings include:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive TB with documentation)
    • Measles (Rubeola) immunity or vaccination
    • Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella per standard requirements
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
  • Education verification for highest degree earned
  • Photo ID (passport-style photo on white background, business attire) required for badge creation
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules (including medication safety, confidentiality, tobacco-free campus, annual compliance, and others as applicable)
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays
  • Required to sign confidentiality and hospital policy acknowledgment forms

Additional Information

  • No call or weekend shifts required
  • Floating to other ambulatory surgery centers in Charlotte area may be required but is rare
  • Scrubs provided onsite
  • Unit does not use a computerized system
