Description
Medical Surgical Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract
Location: Bloomington, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit & Patient Population
- Medical Surgical unit adjacent to the Emergency Department
- Patients held overnight for observation and further workup (similar to a clinical decision unit)
- Patient diagnoses include Medical Surgical cases such as COVID, abdominal pain, respiratory distress, and symptom-based conditions requiring further evaluation
Job Responsibilities
- May be required to perform unit charge nurse duties with provided training and resources (charge coverage is pending operational needs)
- Floating to other units as needed
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with Cerner electronic health record system
Scheduling & Availability
- Weekend work required every other weekend
- Holidays not available for time off: Memorial Day and weekend, Father’s Day weekend, 4th of July weekend, Labor Day weekend, Thanksgiving, and Christmas
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Local candidates not accepted
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including 7-year work/living history, SSN trace, county/state/national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III, education verification, and international search if applicable
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (no instant tests)
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date
- Fit mask test within 12 months with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
- Immunizations and titers:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted; history of disease not accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Strongly recommended but not required
- Flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted
- Tuberculosis screening: Negative TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray and proof of positive history required
- Certifications: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life Support) AHA or RQI accepted
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology test and unit competency exam
- Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with minimum 100% score on online test
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment verified within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or higher
- Employment application covering 7 years with explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter
Additional Notes
- Charge pay available at an elevated rate
- Unit requires completion of facility-specific forms and compliance documents prior to start
- On-site fit testing available only as a last resort and with prior approval
- PAPR use requires facility approval prior to start
This position is ideal for a Med/Surg RN with at least 2 years of experience, comfortable with night shifts and occasional charge nurse responsibilities, and able to meet comprehensive compliance and certification requirements.
