Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks
Shift: Night (4 shifts of 12 hours; 18:45 - 7:15)
Hours per Week: 48 hours


Job Description

  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation.
  • Floating between units is required.
  • Weekend shifts required: 12-16 per contract.
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6.
  • Patient diagnoses include dementia, diabetes, COVID-19, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, and typical medical/surgical cases.
  • Unit includes isolation area for COVID patients and multi-level care including stepdown units.
  • Unit systems: Pyxis (medication), Epic (documentation), SBAR (communication).
  • Orientation: 24 hours unit orientation plus hospital orientation week one with mandatory daily classes.
  • Scrubs: Navy or White.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
  • Contract staff may be assigned to Storm or Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)

Licensing

  • Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina.

Orientation & Training Requirements

  • Must complete hospital orientation week one with daily classes.
  • Must complete 24 hours of unit-specific orientation.
  • Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start (minimum score 82%, up to 3 attempts allowed).
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exams required.
  • Color blindness testing required within 1 year prior to start.
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and confidentiality agreements.
  • Must complete annual compliance and mandatory education as required.
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates).
  • Must complete flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask-wearing requirement.
  • Must complete background checks and verifications as required.
  • Must provide proof of negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start.
  • Must provide proof of immunity or vaccination for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella.
  • Drug screening (9-panel) required within 6 months of start.
  • Must provide photo for badge creation (passport style, white background, business attire).

Additional Information

  • Contract staff may be reassigned mid-contract to different units or centralized office as needed.
  • Must be available to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Must comply with all hospital policies and complete required acknowledgements.
  • Must complete required documentation including tax forms, emergency contact, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.

Patient Care Environment

  • Medical/Surgical unit with telemetry monitoring.
  • Multi-level care including stepdown units.
  • Isolation precautions for infectious patients including COVID-19.
  • Use of advanced respiratory support devices and wound care technologies.

This position is ideal for RNs with solid medical-surgical and telemetry skills who are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment and are willing to float and respond to emergency situations.
