Registered Nurse (RN) – Med Surg

Location: Peru, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts)
Unit: Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)

Unit Details

• Beds: 2 South (18 beds), 3 South (22 beds)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:5
  • Nights: 1:5-6
• Patient Types: Medical acute conditions including pneumonia, heart failure, sepsis, COPD, urologic, surgical cases, total joints, general surgery, and occasional pediatric respiratory illness
• Patient Care Tech (PCT) Ratios and Duties:

  • Days: 1:8-10
  • Evenings: 1:9-10
  • Nights: 1:10-12
  • RNs collaborate with PCTs on nursing care such as Foley care, CHG bathing, and oral care, with multiple daily touchpoints to ensure care and plan of care communication
• Telemetry:

  • RNs monitor telemetry strips and use virtual central telemetry monitoring (Phillips brand)
• Respiratory Equipment: BiPAP (home regimen) and high-flow oxygen; RNs troubleshoot but do not titrate drips
• Charge Nurse and Admin Supervisor present each shift; Charge Nurse takes 1-2 patients

Scheduling & Requirements

• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Rotation: Includes major holidays and their eves (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s)
• Call/Standby: Low census call with 4-hour notification and reevaluation every 4 hours
• Floating: May float to ICU for general acute overflow or to a nearby campus (25 miles away) with at least 2 hours’ notice before shift start
• Orientation: Unit-specific orientation typically lasts 3 shifts (12-hour night shifts)
• Dress Code: Solid color scrubs only, no prints; scrubs are not provided

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
• BLS (AHA) and ACLS (AHA) required
• PALS preferred

Experience

• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience preferred
• Previous travel nursing experience preferred but not required

Additional Notes

• Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
• Local Rate Policy: Applies to clinicians living within 50 miles (affects pay but not included here)
• Non-billable Orientation Hours: 12 hours (orientation hours do not count toward guaranteed hours)
• Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation

This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg RNs comfortable with telemetry monitoring, working 12-hour night shifts, and collaborating closely with patient care techs in a fast-paced acute care environment.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois
• Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year (minimum 1 year)
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• ACLS certification
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
