Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Neuro Unit)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work on a Neuro unit with patient diagnoses primarily in general medicine and neurology.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 to 7:15), totaling 36 hours/week.
  • Shift options: 36 or 48 hours per week; overtime only billed after 48 hours.
  • Float requirement: Travelers float first.
  • Weekend requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend).
  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation.
  • Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Orientation: 24 hours.
  • Scrubs: Navy blue.
  • Unit systems used: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR communication.
  • Scheduling: Manager schedules.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or willingness to learn the charge nurse role.
  • Neuro experience preferred.
  • NIH Stroke Certification preferred.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical).
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal.
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, series, or facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal.
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required.
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must pass with 82% or higher).
  • Color blindness testing within 1 year via Relias.

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Completion of Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules (8-10 hours for acute care).
  • Completion of Medication Safety training with certificate submission.
  • Confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, hospital policies, and other facility-specific documents must be reviewed and signed.
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire).
  • Corporate ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving email instructions.
  • Must complete annual compliance training and any state-specific mandatory education if applicable.

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must be prepared to float and work in various units as assigned.
  • Must be willing to participate in disaster response teams if needed.
  • No prior travel experience required.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions.
  • Employment application and skills checklist must be uploaded prior to start.
