Registered Nurse - PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Burlington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Provide care in a 30-bed Cardiac Medical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with 24/7 coverage.
- Focus on cardiac patients including Congestive Heart Failure, Acute Coronary Syndrome, arrhythmias, pre/post cardiac catheterization, myocardial infarction rule out, syncope, and pacemaker placement.
- Secondary focus on respiratory conditions such as COPD, pneumonia, and BiPAP management.
- Patient-to-nurse ratios typically 1:5; 1:4 when managing drips or BiPAP.
- Work schedule: 3x12 hour day shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM), including weekend rotation and holidays as needed.
- Scheduling is done in 6-week blocks via a self-assisted system based on patient acuity and skill mix.
- Use of EPIC electronic health record system.
- Rapid Response Teams and nurse assistants available 24/7; RN secretary available 7 AM - 11 PM.
Required Experience & Skills
- Valid Registered Nurse license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Cardiac PCU - Progressive Care Unit, with at least some experience within the last year.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Medication Administration Badge (MAB).
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse license valid in North Carolina.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required.
- NIH Stroke Certification preferred.
- Pass/Fail EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam required (must score 82% or higher).
- EPIC system competency testing required.
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
- Social Security Card for badge issuance.
- Background check within 60 days covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in the past 7 years.
- Education verification with primary source verification; foreign equivalency evaluation if education obtained outside the U.S.
- Employment application/resume with 7-year work history.
- Verification of employment history for the last 5 years through a third-party vendor.
- Two supervisory references required from clinical assignments within the last 24 months (one within 12 months).
- Badge photo meeting strict facility requirements (no selfies, solid color background, business casual or uniform attire, forward-facing).
- Health documents including:
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 40 days of start.
- Immunizations: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B (titer or declination), seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption.
- TB testing (Qgold/TSPOT within 6 months) and TB questionnaire updated annually.
- Fit mask test (annual, specific approved N95 respirators).
- Completion of facility-specific forms including health history and contractor equipment acknowledgment.
- Completion of onboarding tasks including Workday login and multi-factor authentication setup prior to start.
Work Environment & Policies
- Zero-tolerance policy for tardiness and unexcused absences.
- Candidates must be flexible with scheduling.
- Floating policy applies to all agency staff; candidates must review and sign.
- Self-scheduling system used for shift assignments based on unit needs and patient acuity.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be aware of and pass the required EKG exam for employment.
- Rapid response team support and nurse assistants are available to support patient care.
- Facility uses centralized cardiac monitoring for telemetry patients.
