Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Stepdown/PCU)

Location: Beaufort, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Stepdown role with frequent floating to MedSurg and MedSurg/Telemetry units.
  • Must be comfortable working in Stepdown, MedSurg, and MedSurg/Telemetry units.
  • Patient ratios: Stepdown 1:4-5, MedSurg 1:5-6.
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
  • Work schedule includes weekdays, every other weekend, floating, and holidays as needed.
  • Must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility.
  • Pediatric experience not required; travelers without pediatric experience will not see pediatric patients.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina.
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
  • Medical Surgical nursing experience.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System

  • Meditech

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (must be carried during hours of service).
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (or within 30 days for new candidates starting after 12/14/25).
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and for contract renewals.
  • Primary source verification of South Carolina RN license (NURSYS verification required).
  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands of the position.
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or facility declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella titers or vaccinations (with declination option)
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination form required if negative)
    • Varicella titer or vaccinations (with declination option)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or facility declination (year-round requirement)
    • COVID vaccination or facility declination
  • Drug testing: 10-panel within 6 months (or 30 days for new candidates starting after 12/14/25); instant tests not accepted.
  • Completion of ~81 Relias program modules prior to first shift and orientation (up to 8 hours orientation time allowed).
  • Badge photo meeting facility standards (no hats, sunglasses, filters, or shadows).
  • Signed job description and confidentiality agreements.
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations.
  • Performance evaluation if previously completed assignments through any agency.
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units.

Additional Notes

  • Floating between Stepdown, MedSurg, and MedSurg/Telemetry units is frequent and mandatory.
  • Must confirm comfort with floating assignments.
  • Facility strictly enforces background and license requirements.
  • Candidates must be able to work within the specified shift and schedule.

This position is ideal for RNs with solid MedSurg and Stepdown experience who are flexible and comfortable floating between related units and working night shifts.
