Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
- House supervisor and charge nurse present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios:
- Days and evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are used house-wide; nurses are not required to read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment includes high flow for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience with titrating drips, specifically heparin drip based on PTT
Job Duties & Expectations
- RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., heparin)
- Floating:
- General unit travelers float within the general unit floor as part of the team
- If floated outside the general unit, assignments are limited to skills the nurse is competent in and paired with a trained nurse for that unit
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday count as weekend shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor, including computer training
- Scheduling: 12-hour shifts, one shift per day, attempts made to accommodate requests; shift blocking possible based on staffing needs
Additional Information
- Dress code: No specific scrub color required; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
- Drug-free workplace: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility
Required Licensure
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
Notes
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
