Registered Nurse (Cardio Thoracic Unit)

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
Schedule: Every other weekend (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday)
Holiday Rotation: Includes Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve

Unit Overview

• 70 beds in the Cardio Thoracic Unit
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Days: 1:4-5
  • Nights: 1:5-6
• Patient types: MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
• Presence of charge nurse 24/7 who rarely takes patient assignments
• House supervisor available 24/7
• Patient care technicians (PCTs) support nursing with ratios:

  • Days: 1:8-9
  • Evenings: 1:9-10
  • Nights: 1:10-12
• Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) with monitor techs on unit; nurses must read and interpret strips

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
• BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS recommended
• Experience with EKG interpretation and medication titration (especially Cardizem and heparin drips)
• Ability to titrate drips as part of nursing duties
• Basic nursing skills appropriate for critical care environment
• Must pass a drug screen (drug-free campus policy)

Orientation & Training

• Non-billable orientation: 12 hours (usually 1 shift or part of one)
• Orientation may be waived or shortened if previously worked at a related facility

Additional Information

• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility
• Floating required to other general medical units as needed
• Dress code: Any scrub color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
• No current call or standby requirements
• Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty

Summary

This is a 6-month night shift RN position in a 70-bed Cardio Thoracic Unit requiring critical care nursing skills including EKG interpretation and drip titration. The role involves working with complex cardiac and pulmonary patients, maintaining telemetry monitoring, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team including PCTs and monitor techs. Orientation is provided, and local candidates within 50 miles are preferred.
