Registered Nurse (ICU) - Illinois

Unit Details

• Department: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
• Unit Size: 12 beds (max census 11; 1 bed reserved for inpatient dialysis)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3, occasionally includes intermediate care patients
• Primary care unit with no nurse aides or patient care technicians

Patient Population & Care

• Common Diagnoses: CHF, COPD, Sepsis, MI, DKA, COVID-19, ventilated patients
• RNs are required to titrate drips including paralytics, sedatives, Cardizem, amiodarone, and other common ICU medications
• Respiratory therapists manage ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow oxygen equipment; RNs troubleshoot as needed
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills preferred; monitor techs watch ICU and telemetry patients

Staffing & Supervision

• Charge nurse present 24/7 and takes patient assignments
• Administrative (House) Supervisor on-site 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage: in-house 22/7 with on-call coverage 5AM-7AM gap
• Intensivist: in-house a few hours daily, available by phone 24/7
• Telemetry/Monitor techs present in hospital

Scheduling & Shifts

• 12-hour shifts: 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM and 6:30 PM - 7:00 AM
• Block scheduling accommodated upon request
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun)
• Holiday requirement: every other holiday
• No call or standby requirement
• ICU travel nurses may float to Med Surg as needed

Orientation

• 12 non-billable orientation hours
• First 3 days include online modules and general facility orientation (Day 1), followed by floor orientation with a nurse (Days 2 & 3)

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation
• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS (AHA)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Negative drug screen required (drug-free campus policy)

Additional Notes

• Dress code: Navy blue scrubs (not provided)
• Local rate adjustments apply for clinicians living within 50 miles
• Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
