Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Assignment duration up to 13 weeks.
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM), totaling 36 hours/week.
- Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
- Work every other weekend required.
- Floating to other Medical Surgical units approximately once per week; flexibility to work with various staff (RNs, LPNs, Techs).
- Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed.
- Unit is a 37-bed Medical Surgical, Oncology unit caring for general medical diagnoses and surgical patients including gastrointestinal, urological, gynecological surgeries, ortho/neurovascular, cardio/pulmonary, and surgical cases such as hysterectomies and mastectomies.
- Typical RN-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6 on nights; may flex to 1:8 with LPN support.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
- Minimum of 1 year Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (AHA) required.
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, PALS, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, ENPC, NIH Stroke Certification, CPI) – verify with unit specifics.
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam completed within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%.
- Competency exam in specialty completed within 1 year prior to start with a passing score of at least 80%.
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start date.
- Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required.
- Proof of immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Proof of 1 prior Tdap vaccine required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination required for candidates starting after November 1, or approved medical/spiritual exemption submitted within 48 hours of contract signing.
- 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if 10-panel).
Background & Documentation
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, SSN trace, national/statewide searches, education verification, and MVR search.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions; process coordinated via consent form and appointment scheduling.
- Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for specific placements (not applicable here unless assigned to those units).
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
Facility Policies & Additional Requirements
- Must review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start.
- Hepatitis B declination form required if declining vaccine or titer.
- Fit testing required on-site for certain roles; appointment must be scheduled and documented.
- Personal or auto insurance required only for Home Health roles (not applicable here).
Notes
- Holiday work is required; holiday time off cannot be guaranteed.
- Local rate applies if residing within 50 miles of the facility.
- Candidates must be willing to float and work with a variety of staff.
This position offers a dynamic Medical Surgical nursing experience with a variety of patient populations and surgical specialties in a fast-paced hospital setting.
