Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Night Shift)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
- Patient diagnoses include AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, Diabetic foot ulcers, and more.
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, or injection) may be required.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6.
- Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 to 7:15).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
- Call requirement: Must be available for call if called off on a prescheduled shift.
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED).
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team/Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required.
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience in an inpatient setting, with at least some experience within the last year
- Experience in charge nurse roles
- Skills in:
- Accessing ports
- Central line blood draws
- PICC line management
- Surgical drains
- Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Ability to administer chemotherapy if needed
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Preferred Qualifications
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification.
- Charge nurse experience.
- Oncology certification preferred.
- OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) certification.
Orientation & Unit Details
- Unit census: Approximately 42 patients daily; ratios may increase during high census.
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Unit systems: PYXIS (medication), EPIC (documentation), SBAR (communication).
- Dress code: Navy blue and white scrubs.
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
Required Certifications & Compliance
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or American Red Cross accepted.
- Oncology certification preferred; chemotherapy certification required if administering chemo.
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit needs (e.g., CPI).
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Must complete color blindness testing within 1 year prior to start.
- Must complete Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82% within 72 hours of start.
- Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification.
- Drug screening required within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
- Fit mask testing (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year of start; PAPR training available if fit test failed.
- Immunizations and titers required or boosters as applicable:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (titer or declination form if negative/equivocal)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required.
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Must complete and sign confidentiality agreement, education roster, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and hospital policies forms.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates).
- Must complete medication safety training and provide certificate of completion.
- Must complete annual compliance training.
- Must provide proof of logging into the required learning management system (Corp ID and I-Learn).
- Must submit a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation immediately after signing contract.
- Employment application and skills checklist must be uploaded.
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions.
Additional Notes
- Shifts called out must be made up with rescheduled shifts.
- Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed.
- Candidates must be prepared to work in disaster or mass casualty situations.
- Navy blue and white scrubs required on unit.
