Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Neuro Unit)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Job Details

  • Unit Type: Neuro Unit with focus on neurological patient care and general medicine diagnoses
  • Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 18:45 to 7:15)
  • Hours per Week: 36 (36 or 48 hours accepted)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Float Requirement: Yes, travelers float first
  • Weekend Requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend)
  • Orientation: 24 hours
  • Uniform: Navy blue scrubs (not provided)
  • Systems Used: Pyxis (medication), EPIC (documentation), SBAR (communication)
  • Scheduling: Manager schedules
  • Additional: Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and required to work during catastrophic events or disasters. Mid-contract unit reassignments possible.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Certification (annual completion preferred)
  • Previous neuro experience preferred
  • Experience or willingness to learn charge nurse role

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including:
    • Local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search
    • Education verification for highest degree specific to nursing profession
  • Drug screening required within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines each)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or facility-specific declination)
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days of start
  • Annual compliance and facility-specific education modules required

Documentation & Orientation Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and education checklists (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care)
  • Confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, hospital policies acknowledgment required
  • Photo for badge required (passport style, white background, business attire)
  • Must complete medication safety training and submit certificate of completion
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials
  • Employment application and references required (2 professional references within 3 years)
  • Performance evaluation required if worked with agency over 1 year

Additional Notes

  • RTO (Request Time Off) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
  • Travelers float first when required to float
  • Must be prepared to work in emergency or disaster situations as part of Storm/Hurricane Teams
  • Internal facility policies and training must be followed strictly

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experience, preferably with neuro skills or interest, who is comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced neuro unit and is willing to participate in emergency response teams. First-time travel nurses are welcome.
