Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Neuro Unit)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks
Unit & Work Environment
- Neuro unit with a focus on neurological patient care and general medicine diagnoses
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
- Night shift: 18:45 – 7:15 (12-hour shifts)
- 36 or 48 hours per week accepted; overtime billed only after 48 hours
- Float requirement: Travelers float first
- Weekend requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend)
- Contract staff may be assigned to Storm Team/Hurricane Team and expected to work during catastrophic events or disasters
- Unit systems include Pyxis (medication), EPIC (documentation), and SBAR (communication)
- Orientation: 24 hours
- Scrubs: Navy blue (not provided)
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Preferred Qualifications
- NIH Stroke certification preferred
- Neuro experience preferred
- Experience or willingness to learn charge nurse role preferred
Compliance & Screening Requirements
- Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local, federal, national criminal databases, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned
- Drug screen required within 30 days of start (negative 10-panel urine screen)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and updated annually
- Fit testing for N95 mask within 1 year of start or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical)
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per facility policy
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required; mask required if exemption granted
- EKG competency exam must be passed with 82% or higher within 72 hours of start (three attempts allowed)
Orientation & Training
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care)
- Medication Safety training required with certificate of completion
- Annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules required
- Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and tobacco-free campus acknowledgment must be signed
- Corp ID and I-Learn account setup required prior to start, including proof of login
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire)
Additional Notes
- RTO (Return to Office) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
- Contract staff may be consolidated to centralized office mid-contract and pre-assigned to units as needed
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel/per diem acute care RNs
- Employment application must be uploaded to facility system prior to start
