RN-OR (Operating Room Registered Nurse) - Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel Nursing (Clinical-Nursing-Travel)
Contract Length: 7 weeks
Job Summary
Provide nursing care for patients in the operating room following established standards and practices in accordance with the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act. Apply professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform patient assessments addressing physical, psychological, socio-cultural, spiritual, cognitive needs, and functional abilities (20% of time).
- Plan and prioritize care based on assessments; evaluate patient progress and revise care plans accordingly (20%).
- Demonstrate clinical competencies specific to the operating room setting (10%).
- Assess patient and family learning needs, provide education, and evaluate teaching effectiveness (10%).
- Identify and respond to ethical issues in patient care; provide non-judgmental care respecting patient diversity and rights (10%).
- Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary teams to plan, deliver, and evaluate patient care (10%).
- Act as a patient advocate (10%).
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, patient safety, and quality initiatives (10%).
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to scrub and circulate in the operating room (required).
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to provide and evaluate patient care.
- Familiarity with organizational policies and procedures.
- Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions.
- Strong critical thinking and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
- Skill in preparing and maintaining records and reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public.
Licensure and Certification
- Current Registered Nurse license in South Carolina OR current compact/multi-state RN license from a recognized NCSBN Compact State (applicant must not be a permanent resident of SC).
- American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card (required).
- Graduate of an accredited school or college of nursing (required).
- BSN preferred, or required within five years of hire date (with some exceptions for internal transfers).
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping.
- Frequent lifting and moving of patients; intermittent lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity and reaching with hands/arms.
- Frequent talking and hearing; corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, infectious materials, communicable diseases, and blood-borne pathogens.
- Moderate noise level.
- Work under stressful conditions, deadlines, irregular hours.
- May require taking call and/or working weekends and holidays based on department needs.
This position is ideal for experienced OR nurses who are comfortable with both scrubbing and circulating duties and who meet licensure and certification requirements.
