Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel Position

Location: Hartsville, Tennessee
Employment Type: Health Services - Travel


Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care including:

  • Executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders
  • Dispensing and administering medications
  • Assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients
  • Applying nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents
  • Performing technical/clinical procedures within scope of education and licensure
  • Attending sick calls with the physician and preparing inmates/residents for examination
  • Operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required
  • Examining and assessing new or ill/injured inmates/residents and referring to emergency care as needed
  • Performing emergency procedures and notifying Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders
  • Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate
  • Supervise and guide licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff
  • Maintain good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies
  • Use established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures while exercising independent judgment
  • Evaluate medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of all medical records
  • Assist Health Service Administrator with medical file reviews and documentation
  • Monitor potential catastrophic illnesses closely
  • Audit pharmacy use for formulary adherence and comply with pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances
  • Observe and record inmate/resident behavior
  • Inspect medical unit for contraband and securely store or dispose of supplies and equipment
  • Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining various medical and operational records and reports
  • Interpret medical, technical, governmental, legal, and non-legal documents
  • Review and respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings as necessary
  • Facilitate accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by ensuring efficient and appropriate medical services
  • Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports; take action in serious incidents and emergencies

Contract Length

  • 12 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited college, university, or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing
  • Current nursing licensure in Tennessee
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year professional nursing experience
