Description
Surgical Technologist 2 - Labor & Delivery
Location: Urbana, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provides surgical technology support for direct and indirect care during operative/invasive procedures. Assists surgeons, serves as a resource and informal lead technologist, mentors and trains new technologists, and utilizes certification education to improve team performance.
Essential Duties
- Ensure instruments, equipment, and sutures are appropriate, complete, and functional
- Set up sterile field and cases efficiently, maintaining organization and readiness
- Collaborate with surgeons to anticipate and adjust for case needs
- Precept surgical techs and RNs for surgeon-specific procedures
- Scrub on simple to complex procedures across various specialties
- Independently “run mayo” and adapt to surgeon preferences and techniques
- Confidently assist during routine and emergency procedures
- Anticipate and provide necessary instruments and supplies without distraction to the operative field
- Perform roles including first scrub, first assist, second scrub, and second circulator
- Participate in case closing activities such as dressing application, patient transfer, and room turnover
- Teach RNs to scrub on various cases
- Plan and respond to expected and unexpected intraoperative events, including case changes and emergencies
- Maintain calm, confident, and steady behavior during procedures
- Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality
- Mentor staff in surgical event planning and performance improvement
- Available for on-call hours including after-hours, weekends, and holidays, with timely response
- May occasionally travel to other facilities within the hospital system
Required Skills & Experience
- Basic reading, writing, and oral communication skills
- Ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to communicate facts clearly or decline to reveal information when appropriate
- Professional, friendly, and helpful demeanor
- Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web browsing
- Comfortable using Windows OS and learning new applications
Education & Certifications
- Completion of Surgical Technology training through an institution, college, or Military Program (required)
- National Certified Surgical Technician Certification by NBSTSA or NCCT (required)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required)
