Job Opportunity: Med Lab Tech II

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel Contract


Job Summary

Perform laboratory analyses and quality testing independently with minimal supervision. Maintain strict confidentiality and work effectively with patients, healthcare professionals, and the public.


Responsibilities

  • Perform testing procedures, quality control, and proficiency testing to ensure accurate, timely, and appropriate lab results.
  • Verify specimen integrity, prioritize tasks, evaluate and interpret data, and document appropriately.
  • Assist with evaluation and implementation of new methods, policy/procedure manuals, and inspections.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments; perform instrument quality control and preventive maintenance.
  • Use Cerner/STAR system for ordering, receiving, canceling tests, and reviewing results while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, physicians, nurses, patients, and other departments.
  • Follow laboratory and hospital policies, maintain a safe work environment, and comply with medical necessity and billing regulations.
  • Participate in mandatory and continuing education programs and support department performance improvement goals.

Requirements

  • Certification: ASCP or NCA registered (Required)
  • Education: A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology or Associate’s degree with prerequisite coursework and clinical training (Required)
  • Alternate route candidates must meet ASCP or NCA education and training requirements.
  • Ability to operate laboratory instrumentation and perform patient phlebotomy (Required).
  • Proficient with standard office equipment (telephones, fax machines, computer terminals).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to make sound decisions under stress and time constraints.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • May require lifting or moving items up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination.
  • Corrected hearing and vision within normal range; normal color perception required.
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, toxic substances, biohazards, and communicable diseases.
  • Fast-paced, high-traffic, and potentially stressful laboratory environment.
  • May require taking call and/or working weekends and holidays based on department needs.
