Job Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care including executing provider orders, administering medications, assisting in examinations and treatments, and applying nursing and supervisory techniques in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The role involves performing technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute Licensed Independent Provider’s orders and dispense medications.
• Assist providers during examinations and treatments.
• Attend sick calls with physicians and prepare inmates/residents for examination.
• Operate pill call, dispense medication, and document according to policies.
• Examine and assess inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries; refer to emergency care as needed.
• Perform emergency procedures and notify providers for treatment orders.
• Supervise and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nurses and non-licensed medical staff.
• Monitor inpatient hospitalizations for early releases.
• Maintain confidentiality and security of medical records.
• Assist with review and documentation of medical services.
• Audit pharmacy use and ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances.
• Observe and record inmate/resident behavior.
• Inspect medical units for contraband and safely store or dispose of supplies.
• Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups.
• Prepare and maintain medical records, reports, and logs.
• Interpret medical, legal, and regulatory documents.
• Participate in accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO).
• Prepare safety and accident reports; respond to serious incidents and emergencies.
• Escort and coordinate movement of inmates/residents for medical treatment.
• Conduct searches for contraband and ensure security of confined areas.
• Work rotating shifts and perform rescue functions during emergencies.
