Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care including:

• Executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders
• Dispensing and administering medications
• Assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients
• Applying nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents
• Performing technical/clinical procedures within scope of education and licensure
• Attending sick calls with physicians and preparing inmates/residents for examination
• Operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required
• Examining and assessing inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries and referring to emergency care as needed
• Performing emergency procedures and notifying Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders
• Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate
• Supervise and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff
• Maintain good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies
• Use sound independent judgment while following corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures
• Evaluate medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication
• Maintain security and confidentiality of all medical records
• Assist with review of medical files to ensure documentation of all services
• Monitor potential catastrophic illnesses closely
• Audit pharmacy use for formulary adherence and comply with pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances
• Observe and record inmate/resident behavior
• Inspect medical unit for contraband and securely store or dispose of supplies and equipment
• Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups
• Assist in preparing and maintaining various medical and operational records, reports, and logs
• Interpret medical and technical procedures, regulations, and legal documents
• Respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings as necessary
• Facilitate accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by providing efficient and appropriate medical services
• Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports and take appropriate action in emergencies

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum of 1 year of correctional nursing experience, with correctional experience within the last year
• Experience working in a corrections setting
